City hosting walkabout in Bo-Kaap

The City of Cape Town invites residents to a walkabout in the Bo-Kaap as part of its ongoing engagements with the community about the draft local neighbourhood plan or local spatial development framework (LSDF) for the area.

The draft LSDF for the Bo-Kaap is available for public comment until 31 October 2021 and the City encourages all residents and interested parties to contribute by submitting comments.

The details of the walkabout are as follows:

• Saturday, 23 October 2021
• 09:30 to 11:00
• Residents and interested parties are to meet City officials at the Schotschekloof Civic Centre in Yusuf Drive in the Bo-Kaap

During the walkabout, officials and residents will visit key sites and erven mentioned in the draft LSDF. This is an ideal opportunity for the community to point out specific challenges, and to give further input.

The walkabout follows on from a constructive open day meeting with residents on 12 October 2021 where officials from the City’s Urban Planning and Design Department provided additional information and explanations about the draft LSDF.

‘About 40 residents attended the meeting and I was told that those present gave valuable input about their concerns and how they want the draft plan to respond to these. Some of the issues mentioned pertain to heritage protection, the need for affordable housing and more social facilities in the Bo-Kaap, the development of sites along Buitengracht, traffic and access issues, as well as how walking tours can be expanded deeper into the neighbourhood to benefit more residents,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Marian Nieuwoudt.

• Submit comments about the draft LSDF, also known as a local neighbourhood plan, on the City’s website at www.capetown.gov.za/haveyoursay

‘The City is putting in a lot of effort to reach out to as many residents as possible within the Bo-Kaap during this commenting period. Those living in the Bo-Kaap have intricate knowledge of the neighbourhood and we want to tap into this wisdom. All of the comments that we receive will be considered as we refine and finalise the draft neighbourhood plan. By working together we can produce a plan that will benefit the Bo-Kaap and its people for generations to come,’ said Alderman Nieuwoudt.

Once approved by Council, the LSDF will play a pivotal role in the regeneration of the Bo-Kaap.
